Stephania caudex plants are native mainly to tropical and subtropical Asia, especially Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and nearby regions. In nature, they grow in seasonal forests, dry woodland, scrubland and limestone areas.

Their swollen caudex helps store water, allowing them to survive dry periods before producing vines and leaves again in the growing season.
